A climate, energy and tax package pushed by President Joe Biden and Democrats in Congress – legislation once believed to be dead – has been given new life.

Sen. Joe Manchin III of West Virginia – the only Democratic holdout in the upper house – has relented and agreed to provide what could be the key vote in passing the bill.

According to The New York Times, Manchin and Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer of New York struck a deal to trim billions of dollars in tax increases.

The Senate is evenly divided between Democrats and Republicans; in case of a tie, Vice President Kamala Harris could cast the deciding vote. Democrats hold a slim majority in the House of Representatives.

Three dead, many homeless from flooding

Flooding caused by heavy rains in Kentucky has taken the lives of at least three people and many are seeking higher ground to avoid the rising water levels.

According to The Associated Press, the downpour has put roads, houses and businesses under water. “In a word this is devastating,” said Andy Beshear, governor of Kentucky. “And I do believe it will end up being one of the most significant,  deadly floods we have had in Kentucky in at least a very long time.”

Flash flooding has been reported in eastern Kentucky, western Virginia and southern West Virginia.

Sports: Trout has “rare” back condition

The possibility that Mike Trout, the Angels’ All-Star centerfielder, might not return to the lineup this season is being raised as the team athletic trainer on Wednesday said that Trout has a “pretty rare condition” in his back and it’s unknown when he can resume practice and play.
