The man who fatally shot eight people at a mall near Dallas, Texas, had been discharged from the Army for mental health issues. Eight others were also wounded.
According to USA Today, Mauricio Garcia, 33, may have held white supremacist and neo-Nazi opinions which could have been a motivation in the attacks.
According to the newspaper, Garcia had a patch on his chest with the letters “RWDS” which authorities say means “right wing death squad.”
He was killed by a police officer at the assault in Allen, Texas. In addition to the eight killed, seven others were hospitalized.
Driver faces manslaughter charges
The driver of a sports utility vehicle that killed eight people in Brownsville, Texas, was charged Monday with eight counts of manslaughter and 10 counts of aggravated assault.
According to the Associated Press, George Alvarez ran a red light and his vehicle went out of control, hitting 18 people waiting at a bus stop near a center for migrants.
No motive has been determined, nor has any influence of alcohol or drugs been declared by authorities.
AP, NY Times honored with Pulitzer Prizes
The Associated Press – of which The Orange County Tribune – is an associate member – and The New York Times were honored with multiple Pulitzer Prizes on Monday.
The AP won for reporting, photography and public service. The Times won for international reporting and investigative reporting.
Two southern web news sites were winners. AL.com. of Alabama won for local reporting and column writing, and Mississippi Today also won for local reporting.
The Los Angeles Times won for breaking news reporting and feature photography.
