According to the Associated Press, final agreement has been reached between President Joe Biden and Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy to raise the federal debt ceiling and avoid a default on the nation’s ability to pay its bills.
“Good news,” said Biden on Sunday at the White House.
Negotiators from both sides believe they have enough votes in Congress to approve the deal, which must be in place before the June 7 deadline.
Turkish president re-elected
Recep Tayyip Erdogan was elected for another five-year term as president of Turkey. The New York Times reports that with nearly all votes counted, he defeated opposition candidate Kemal Kilicdaroglu by 52.1 percent to 47.9 percent.
Turkey is a member of NATO but Erdogan has been friendly with Vladimir Putin, president of Russia.
Erdogan has been accused of running an increasingly authoritarian government that tilts the society away from a secular outlook toward one more in line with conservative Islam.
Dozen killed in Memorial Day shootings
The Memorial Day weekend has been marked by the fatal shootings of at least a dozen people across the U.S.
United Press International is reporting that deadly shootings took place in Chicago, Atlanta, Washington DC and New Mexico.
Three people were killed in åat a motorcycle rally in Red River, New Mexico and eight in separate incidents in Chicago.
Sports: Florida beats California
Both Florida teams in Major League Baseball defeated California teams on Sunday. The Tampa Bay Rays outslugged the Los Angeles Dodgers 11-10 in St. Petersburg.
Despite four home runs – one each by Chris Taylor, Max Muncy, Trayce Thompson and J.D. Martinez – the Blue Crew fell short in a back-and forth-game. The winning run came in the bottom of the seventh when Luke Raley scored on a ground out by Wander Franco.
The Dodgers are 32-22 and lead the National League West by 1.5 games over Arizona. The Rays are 39-19 and lead the American League East by four games over the Baltimore Orioles.
The Los Angeles Angels lost 2-0 in Anaheim to the Miami Marlins, who swept all three games in their series. The Halos (28-26) could only muster five hits as they fell into fourth place in the AL West.
Weather: May gray on Memorial Day

The forecast for the West Orange County area calls for Monday’s daytime high to be 68 with an overnight low of 59. Temperatures will vary from 69 to 65 this week during the day and from 57 to 59 at night. There’s a 14 percent chance of rain Monday and Tuesday.
