The lineup for the first Republican presidential debate is set, as seven candidates have met the qualifications for the event scheduled for Aug. 23.
According to the Associated Press, the seven are:
- Former president Donald Trump
- Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis
- Sen. Tim Scott (South Carolina)
- Nikki Haley (former South Carolina governor)
- Vivek Ramaswamy (biotech entrepreneur and author)
- Chris Christie (former New Jersey governor)
- North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum.
Not qualifying – yet – is former vice president Mike Pence and five other announced candidates.
However, Trump is considered unlikely to appear, based on his strong standing in polling and fund-raising.
Dozens killed in Pakistan rally
At least 43 people have been killed in an explosion in a political rally in Pakistan on Sunday, with another 200 more wounded.
The New York Times is reporting that the blast took place in Bajaur near the border with Afghanistan.
The explosion likely was set off by a suicide bomber and while no responsibility was claimed for the incident, the Islamic State (ISIS-K) is suspected.
The death toll is expected to rise.
Sports: Angels bounce back; Dodgers fall
Hunter Renfroe’s two-run home run in the 10th inning gave the Los Angeles Angels a 3-2 win over the Toronto Blue Jays at Rodgers Centre on Sunday, and allowed the Halos to salvage a victory in the three-game series.
With the win, the Angels are 55-51 and remain in third place in the American League West and four games back in the wild card race.
The win went to Carlos Estevez (5-1) in relief, but starter Tyler Anderson pitched well, working 6.1 innings and giving up seven hits but just one run. He struck out two and walked one.
Next for the Orange County team is a three-game series in Atlanta starting on Monday, then back to Anaheim for a six-game homestead hosting the Seattle Mariners and San Francisco Giants.
On the injury front, Taylor Ward – who was struck in the face by a pitch on Saturday – is on the injured list with facial fractures with no timetable for his return.
The Angels have called up infielder Kevin Pablo from their Salt Lake City AAA team.
The Los Angeles Dodgers lost 9-0 to the Cincinnati Reds on Sunday. With the loss, the Blue Crew is 59-45 and leads the National League West by two games over the San Francisco Giants.
