Friday night football for our West Orange County high school football teams was a mix of barnburners and blowouts.

Overall, locals won seven games and lost five.

Among the close ones, Garden Grove High’s team squared its record at 2-2 with a 49-47 win over the Gahr Gladiators.

Huntington Beach (2-2) slipped past Redondo Union 13-12 and Los Amigos (2-1) edged Cabrillo Union 28-27.

Two Garden Grove League rivals who have not often been title contenders in the past are having a strong start this year, both improving to 3-1 with wins on Friday.

La Quinta defeated Costa Mesa 38-6 while Bolsa Grande slammed Century 42-14. Also improving to 3-1 was Western, as the Pioneers romped past the Banning High Pilots of Wilmington by 54-7.

Westminster (3-1) also enjoyed a blowout, beating Anaheim 47-0.

On the other hand, some teams suffered disappointments. Edison, highly-ranked early in the season, lost 31-28 to Palos Verdes, to see its record fall to 1-2.

Orange (1-3) , also highly-touted, lost its third straight game after opening with a win over Pacifica. The Panthers were defeated by La Habra 48-20.

Ocean View (2-2) lost a close one, falling 20-17 to Artesia.

However some locals were on the receiving end of one-sided contests.

Loara (0-3) lost 42-7 to University, and Santiago (2-2) fell 56-6 to Estancia.
