Reacting to a series of highly-publicized murders, New Mexico Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham on Saturday issued an emergency order that suspends the right to carry firearms in public in the Albuquerque area.
The Associated Press is reporting that legal challenges were immediately filed in federal court, claiming the order violated the Second Amendment to the Constitution.
Grisham’s order temporarily banned the bearing of arms in public in the capital city and Bernalilo County.
It was also reported that the governor knew there would be opposition but that she wanted to “move the debate” on gun laws.
Morocco death toll past 2,000
The massive earthquake that struck Morocco outside of Marrakesh has killed at least 2,000 people.
The New York Times reports that the quake – which had a magnitude of at least 6.8 – hit hardest in rural towns and villages, where many dwellings are constructed from bricks made of mud.
Collapsing buildings not only buried people beneath the rubble, but blocked roads making getting aid to devastated areas difficult and slow.
