Aid is now promised for Gaza

Some humanitarian aid will be available to Gaza in the aftermath of the destruction of a hospital there.

President Joe Biden’s visit to Israel came with the news that Israel would allow “limited” aid to the war-torn area. Egypt will deliver some of that aid – food, medicine, water – and Biden said the U.S. promised $100 million in humanitarian aid as well.

Each side – Israel and Hamas – have accused the other of causing the tragedy at the hospital. Hamas says it was the product of an Israeli air strike, while Israel counters that the likely cause was a rocket launched by Hamas that went off-course.

Biden said that American intelligence indicates the explosion was a wayward rocket.

Jordan’s speaker bid falls short again

In a scene reminiscent of Kevin McCarthy’s long battle to become the Speaker of the House, Rep. Jim Jordan on Wednesday lost his second try to be elected to that post.

Jordan (R-Ohio) picked up some supporters, but lost some as well. He needs a majority of the 435 members of the House of Representatives.

In the floor vote, Jordan has 199 votes while Democratic Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries of New York had the backing of all 212 Democrats.

Jeffries, considered a far-right “firebrand,” led the fight to unseat McCarthy. Now the deadlock continues.

Sports: Aces win second straight WNBA title

The Las Vegas Aces edged the New York Liberty 70-69 to win their second consecutive WNBA title on Wednesday in New York.

A’ja Wilson scored 24 points and grabbed 16 rebounds and was chosen Most Valuable Player of the finals.

Weather: Not quite as hot

While our West Orange County area will get warmer as the weekend approaches, it won’t be quite as hot as in earlier forecasts. Partly cloudy skies will be in place right through Monday. Thursday’s daytime high is predicted to be 87 with an overnight low of 63. Friday should be 88 (62), but things should cool off a bit by Saturday to 83 (60) and Sunday to 74 (60).
