A United Nations resolution calling for an immediate “humanitarian” cease-fire in Gaza was vetoed Friday by the United States. As a permanent member of the Security Council, the U.S. can veto any resolution.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres invoked “Article 99” of the United Nations Charter allowing him to declare a threat to international peace and security.

America’s refusal to go along with the proposal comes from a fear that stopping the fighting would allow Hamas to remain in Gaza, leading to another war later.

Europe’s new A.I law

A new law regulating artificial intelligence was passed Friday by the European Parliament in an effort to curb the rapid use of the technology that carries both promise and danger.

The A.I Act is intended to reduce abuses such as law enforcement violation of privacy as well as the spreading of disinformation by the creation of photorealistic images. Also targeted is the use of A.I. to take work away from humans.

Once finalized, the law wouldn’t take effect for one to two years, during which time the technology of artificial intelligence may have evolved beyond this piece of legislation.
