Arizona National Guard troops have been ordered to the U.S- Mexico border by Gov. Katie Hobbs to help cope with a rise in the number of illegal crossings into the state.

“I am taking action where the federal government won’t,” said Hobbs, a Democrat.

At issue is the closing earlier this month by the federal government of the Lukeville Point of Entry. With that closed, attempts to cross the border at other locations have increases strongly.

Arizona’s two U.S. Senators – Mark Kelly (a Democrat) and Kyrsten Sinema (independent) have criticized the action.

The three Israeli hostages mistakenly shot by Israeli forces were waving white flags at the time of the incident on Friday.

That action violated the rules of engagement for Israeli forces, said the army chief of staff. “It is forbidden to shoot at those who raise a white flag and seek to surrender,” he said.

The three hostages had been abducted by Hamas.

On Saturday morning, Israeli forces pulled back from the grounds around a hospital which had been partially destroyed and then raided by troops.
