The U.S. Supreme Court unanimously decided to keep the abortion pill Mifepristone available nationwide Thursday.
That ruling was based on the conclusion that the state attorney generals who wanted to block the use of the drug – now used in a majority of pregnancy terminations – had no “standing” to bring the matter before the court, having suffered no harm.
Although access to the drug was preserved, it’s believed that the issue will return under different legal approaches.
The court’s ruling comes two years after the majority voted to overturn the 1973 decision on Roe v. Wade, which created a nationwide right to abortion.
US-Ukraine security deal is signed
A security agreement between the United States and Ukraine was signed Thursday by the presidents of those countries.
Joe Biden and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced a 10-year deal that does not obligate the U.S. to interfere directly in the conflict between Russia and Ukraine but does promise continued financial and military aid.
However, a security agreement is not a treaty and could be reversed by another president. Former president Donald Trump has expressed skepticism about the value of American aid to Ukraine, and is locked in a close race with Biden for the White House.
In a related move, the U.S. and European allies are combining to use seized Russian assets as collateral for a $50 billion loan package for Ukraine.
