President Joe Biden on Thursday promised a peaceful and orderly transition of power in remarks from The White House.
He asked the public to “bring down the temperature” in politics and called for more national unity, according to United Press International.
“I’ve said many times can’t love your country only when you win,” he said. “You can’t love your neighbor only when you agree. Something I hope we can do no matter who you voted for is see each other not as adversaries but as fellow Americans.”
He remarked that he had called to congratulate president-elect Donald Trump and praised Vice President Kamala Harris.
Also, he cited what felt were accomplishments of his term. “We’re leaving behind the strongest economy in the world,” the president said. “I know people are still hurting, but things are changing rapidly. Together we’ve changed America for the better. Now we have 74 days to finish the term, our term. Let’s make every day count.”
The House is still up for grabs
While the GOP has won the presidency and the Senate, who will control the House of Representatives is still undecided.
So far, Republicans appear to have won 210 of 435 seats in the lower chamber to 198 for the Democrats. It appears that the former is more likely to get at least the 218 needed for a majority, but the outcome is complicated by the slow counting of votes in California, where Democrats are hoping to flip enough seats to prevail.
Control of the House could give the Democrats control over taxes and the national budget and the ability to elect Speaker of the House. The speaker is next in succession after the vice president.
