Edison High School’s football team won its first state championship on Saturday, defeating Central High of Fresno 21-14 to grab the CIF 1-A title at Saddleback College in Mission Viejo.

The Chargers (12-4) never trailed, but had to hold off several deep drives by the Grizzlies in the fourth quarter before scoring the winning touchdown with 20 seconds to go.

Jake Minter caught a throw from Sam Thomson that turned into a 54-yard pass-and-run play that decided the game.

Edison’s Julius Gillick rushed for 129 yards and two touchdowns, and the defense did its part by intercepting two Central passes.

The Chargers followed a difficult road to their first California crown, losing their first two games, two of three games in the Alpha League and their starting quarterback.

But they closed with six consecutive wins and historic glory.
