The Edison High Charger football program has never won a state title, but most of that’s because state football championship games are a relatively new thing on the Golden State’s prep gridirons scene, having begun in 2006.
However, on Saturday at Saddleback College in Mission Viejo at 3:30 p.m., the green-and-gold (11-4) will have chance to make history when they take on the Central High Grizzlies of Fresno in Division 1-A title game.
Edison is on a five-game winning streak after finishing third in the Alpha League. The Chargers are led by senior Julius Gillick, he averages 168.9 yards per game and has scored 36 touchdowns.
They have a robust passing game, too, as sophomore Sam Thomson has thrown for 13 passes after coming off the bench to replace the injured senior starter Savelio Niumata, who was injured.
The Grizzlies have won seven straight and finished second in the Tri-River League. Junior Brandon Smith is the team’s top rusher with 28 TD’s; he’s averaging 128.6 rushing yards a game. Sophomore Jelani Dippel has thrown for 39 touchdowns.
The game will be live-streamed on the NFHS Network.
