A last look at pre-league hoops

SANTIAGO’S boys team has a 12-4 mark (GGUSD photo).

The flurry of high school basketball tournaments wrapped up on Monday and the attention will now turn to league play, which starts for most teams on Tuesday, Jan. 7 and Wednesday, Jan. 8.

Edison, which won a CIF-SS football title and a state crown, is fielding a strong boys’ basketball team as well.

On Monday the Chargers took home a championship in the Tustin Classic, defeating Newport Harbor 64-53. Jayden Dei led the green-and-gold with 27 points. Derrick Johnson added 19.

Garden Grove High’s boys team is on a roll, having won five of six games, including a 70-44 win over Tarbut V’Torah on Saturday.

The Argonauts (11-8) were led by Neiman Quach with 14 points. Drue Anzai added 12 and Issac Campanzo had 10.

Grove will have a tough game next on Jan. 8, hosting the Katella Knights (9-5), who are also hot, having won six games in a row.

The Pacifica boys’ team could be strong as well. The Mariners are 12-6 after a 9-1 start.

The County Line

The Orange County hoops rankings as published by the The Register gives little love to our West Orange County teams, as usual.
Edison (11-6) is ranked 19th and Marina (12-6) is 22nd among boys.
On the girls’ side, Marina (9-7) is rated 25th.

Our look at the top

We won’t start our High 5 until league play starts, but here’s a quick look on the leaders so far, based on MaxPreps rankings.
