President Donald Trump’s executive order on “birthright citizenship” was temporarily blocked by a federal judge on Thursday.

According to the Associated Press, U.S. District Court Judge John Coughenour in Seattle stayed Trump’s order for 14 days to give the parties time to prepare further arguments on the order, but the judge – an appointee of Ronald Reagan – didn’t seem to hold out much chance of it being constitutional.

The 14th Amendment to the Constitution ratified in 1868 declared that “all persons born in the United States … are citizens of the United States.”

“I’ve been on the bench for over four decades,” said the judge.”I can’t remember another case where the question presented was as clear as this one. This is a blatantly unconstitutional order.”

The Justice Department attorney said he “absolutely” believed that the president’s order was lawful.
