PRESIDENT Donald Trump announced tariffs on Mexico and Canada. Earlier he commented on the deadly air crash.
Many questions remain in the aftermath of the deadly collision of a an Army Blackhawk helicopter and a commercial airliner late Wednesday in Washington, D.C, killing all 67 people on board both aircraft.
Both the helicopter and jet airplane fell into the Potomac River after the collision.
The Associated Press is reporting that those killed included teenage figure skaters with their mothers and coaches, a group of hunters and dozens of others. At least 28 bodies have been pulled from the water.
It’s unclear what caused the crash. The jet was about to land when the helicopter appeared to fly into it from behind, bring both down.
Air traffic controllers say that the helicopter radioed that it had the jet “in sight.”
President Donald Trump blamed the tragedy on diversity mandates used in the federal government, but provided no evidence for his claim, which he later withdrew. He did sign an executive order banning “woke policies” in the operation of federal aviation operations.
Tariffs on U.S. neighbors on the way
Twenty-five percent tariffs on goods coming into the United States from Canada and Mexico will take effect on Saturday, President Donald Trump said on Thursday.
He cited illegal immigration, the smuggling of chemical used for the deadly fentanyl and trade deficits for imposing the levies.
There is concern that not only will the tariffs carry the risk of increasing the prices paid by consumers for goods imported from those countries but that Canada and Mexico may slap tariffs on American trade in response.
“We don’t need the products they have,” said Trump. “We have all the oil you need. We have all the trees you need, meaning the lumber.”
Weather: Warm for winter
That’s right, considering that it’s January, temperatures in our West Orange County area are warming as we head toward the weekend. Friday’s forecast calls for a daytime high of 61 with an overnight low of 46 under mostly cloudy skies. Saturday will see the high jump to 67 with a lot of 59, with partly cloudy skies. Sunday and Monday will climb a bit to 69 with lows of 49 and 51. Sunday will be partly cloudy and Monday cloudy.
