Israeli forces continued to push into the Palestinian territory of Gaza, making gains in the previously mostly undisturbed city of Deir al-Balah.

According to the Associated Press, that city was one of few that had managed – until now – to escape widespread damage.

It’s reported that at least 13 people, included two women and five children, were killed there in the latest round of fighting.

The Israeli government has said that its move deeper into Gaza is an effort to force Hamas into releasing the hostages it still holds.
