Ramping up what could be a national battle over redrawing congressional districts, the California state legislature on Thursday approved submitting to voters on Nov. 4 measure that woud allow for redistricting districts for the U.S. House of Representatives in response to similar moves in Texas.
The new maps would favor Democrats, just as changes in the Lone Star State would favor Republicans, perhaps by as many as five seats.
President Donald Trump has asked Texas leaders to redistrict enough to add five more House members to safeguard a narrow Republican edge in the lower house.
However, California is moving parry that with the November ballot measure. New York and Illinois, both strongly Democratic states, may make similar moves.

We may have to wait for a few days, but the heat wave that’s hit our West Orange County cities will abate … eventually.
The forecast for Friday is for a daytime high of 90, followed by a high of 88 on Saturday with mostly sunny skies. Overnight lows will be at 69. Sunday will be 88, with overnight lows at 69.
The real drop will hit on Monday (83), followed by another to 81 on Tuesday. However, we won’t see the 70s until September.
Sports: Dodgers rock the Rockies
The Los Angeles Dodgers, leaders in the National League West, slammed the last place Colorado Rockies 9-5 on Thursday night in Denver.
Despite having leadoff batter Shohei Ohtani out of the lineup, the Blue Crew (73-55) got 12 hits, including home runs by Freddie Freeman (his 16th) and Andy Pages (21).
Clayton Kershaw (8-2) got the win. lasting 5.2 innings and yielding six hits and three earned runs. He struck out three batters and walked one.
