1.2 million have left work force

An estimated 1.2 million immigrants have left the U.S. labor force since President Donald Trump began his immigration crackdown earlier this year.

The Associated Press is citing the Preliminary Census Bureau data – as analyzed by the Pew Research Center – from January 2025 through the end of July 2025 and it includes both people in the country illegally and those who have legal status.

About 20 percent of the American workforce are immigrants, including 45 percent in farming, fishing and forestry, while 30 percent of construction workers and 24 percent of service workers.

The change could have an impact on the number of workers available in several labor-intensive fields such as health care and the fruit and vegetable industries come harvest time

Guiliani is out of hospital

Rudolph Giuliani, former mayor of New York and attorney for Donald Trump, got some good news on Monday from two sources.

Giuliani, who was injured in an automobile crash on Saturday, was pronounced well enough to be discharged from a Manchester, New Hampshire hospital.

Also on Monday, the White House announced that he would be receiving the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian honor bestowed by the U.S. government.

He suffered a fractured vertebra when the car in which he was riding was rear-ended by another car.

Sports: Angels fall to Astros

The Los Angeles Angels saw their two-game winning streak snapped on Monday with an 8-3 loss to the Houston Astros on the road.

The Halos took a 3-2 lead on home runs by Zach Neto and Jo Adell, but faltered later. The team is now 64-73 and in fourth place in the American League West.

The Los Angeles Dodgers did not labor on Labor Day and will be back in action Tuesday against the Pirates in Pittsburgh.

Weather: Hotter, then cooler

We get back to 90 in our West Orange County cities on Tuesday. The forecast calls for a low of 70 under partly cloudy skies; it’ll be cooler the closer you get to the beach. It will also be cooler in general on Wednesday at 86 (68) and on Thursday at 82 (66) and Friday at 80 (66). The partly cloudy skies will persist into the new weekend.
