Library censorship issue may
go back to the courtroom
The Huntington Beach City Council is planning an appeal of an Orange County Superior Court ruling that declared its restrictions on books for minors in its library system was illegal.
A policy was enacted by the council requiring that youths would face restrictions on books with sexual content, and moved to create a review board to decide which books could be bought.
A judge ruled that the policy violated the state’s Freedom to Read Act.
In June, voters voted 58.41 percent to 41.59 percent to eliminate the board, which the council acknowledged.
At a meeting earlier this month the city attorney announced that an appeal from the court’s decision is being prepared at no cost to the public.
