It was a rough Friday for most West Orange County high school football teams in the opening round of the CIF-SS playoffs.
Of the nine teams that qualified for the post-season tournament, only two – Edison and Pacifica – won and advanced to the second round.
In a duel of two schools from the Huntington Beach Union High School District, the Chargers (now 6-5) defeated the Oilers 31-19.
Sam Thomson led the green and gold by completing 11 of 19 passes for three touchdowns in the Division 3 contest.
Edison will face Inglewood (6-5), which defeated Capistrano Valley 40-16 in its playoff opener.
Brady Edmunds of the orange-and-black hit on 23 of 37 passes for 190 yards and one score.
The win for Edison represented a satisfying turnaround from a grim Alpha League season in which the Chargers finished last in one of CIF-SS’s toughest conferences.
The Oilers are 8-3 after taking second place in the Epsilon League.
Pacifica (8-3) defeated El Rancho 35-14, jumping out to a 21-7 first quarter lead and finishing with two more scores in the fourth quarter.
James Anema completed two touchdown passes to Eli Sandoval and M’Kai Brown rushed for three scores in the victory.
The Mariners, champions of the Omicron League, advance to the round of the Division 10 playoffs next week against Liberty High of Winchester. The Bisons defeated West High of Torrance 42-35 in their playoff opener.
