A proposal to name a section of Main Street at Goldenwest Street after civil rights pioneer Sylvia Mendez was set aside at Wednesday night’s meeting of the Westminster City Council.
The original proposal came from Councilmember Amy Phan West, who wanted the name “Sylvia Mendez Way” placed at the entrance to Westminster High School.
But most of the speakers on the proposal expressed opposition, according to published reports.
Concerns offered included that the Mendez family’s consent had not been received, and that Main Street was too small of a location to be a true honor.
A proposal to withdraw the issue was approved 3-0, while West abstained.
Also on Wednesday night the council elected Councilmember Mark Nguyen as the new vice mayor, teplacing Carlos Manzo.
The regular meeting of Dec. 24, 2025 has been cancelled.
The next regular meeting will be held on Wednesday, January 14, 2026 at 6 p.m.
