An ordinance that would ban the sale of kratom products and curb the sale and distribution of nitrous oxide products was tabled for two weeks by the Garden Grove City Council on Tuesday night.
The vote was 7-0 in favor of the delay, with several council members wanting a new look at the issues involved, including possibly splitting the two with – as one council member put it – to restrict the sale of kratom, but ban the sale of nitrous oxide.
Kratom is a “supplement” that has been connected to a variety of health problems, including death.
Possible ill effects are addiction, hallucinations, seizures, liver toxicity, and worse.
Its popularity comes from its reputation not only in treating pains, but also its stimulant effects of “increased alertness, boosted physical energy, talkativeness and a more social behavior,” according to drugs.com.
Nitrous oxide, commonly known as “laughing gas,” is a mild sedative often used in dentistry. But it can be abused; people inhaling nitrous oxide can suffer from a variety of side effects, including dizziness, nausea, excessive sweating and hallucinations.
The council also heard a presentation from the Orange County Fire Authority and an update on the status of the Civic Center Revitalization Project, including the new police facility under construction.
