Is this a fire sale or a new leaf?

When a new general manager takes over a foundering sports franchise such as the Los Angeles Angels, his first moves are always closely scrutinized, as are his last, when the inevitable “house-cleaning” arrives.

The Halos recently traded their “top” pitcher (Jose Soriano) to the Toronto Blue Jays, in exchange for three “prospects” with interesting names: Arhun Nimmala, Eddie Micheletti Jr. and Angel Rivera: an infielder, an outfielder and a pitcher.

Soriano (9-6 with the Angels) started out red-hot with a 0.24 ERA through his first six starts, but came down to earth with too many walks and home runs that pushed the number to 4.64 since his impressive start.

Earlier, Angels General Manager John Mozeliak traded the Angels’ top reliever – Chase Silseth – and the team’s regular catcher (Logan O’Hoppe) to the Texas Rangers for another “prospect,” 19-year-old Angel Arredondo, who’s batting .247 in a very minor league.

Also shipped out was Jo Adell to Cleveland.

“We know we have to start shaking up this roster,” he said. “Clearly, where the Angels are right now, we need to do things differently.”

Can’t argue with that. The trades looks like a gamble for everybody. But with the clearance of the team of two of its best pitchers and their weak-hitting but good defensive catcher gone, it wouldn’t be a bad bet that – for the rest of 2026 – the Angels will get worse before they get better.
