DOLLY PARTON died Tuesday at the age of 80 (Wikipedia).

Dolly Parton, an entertainment star whose career spanned country and pop music, films, and more across generations, has died at the age of 80.

According to the Associated Press, she died peacefully Tuesday in Nashville, Tennessee. The cause of death has not been disclosed.

Known as well for her “curvy” figure, colorful costumes and flamboyant hair stytes, she was a philanthropist and business leader as well, best-known for her creation of the “Dollywood” theme park.

Her first major hit was “Jolene” in 1973, and she followed that up with “I Will Always Love You” in 1974 and “Here You Come Again.” She could cross over into mainstream pop music with songs like “Islands in the Stream,” a duet with Kenny Rogers, a song written by the Gibb Brothers, who were the Bee Gees singing group.

Her movie credits included “9 to 5” (also a hit record) and “Best Little Whorehouse in Texas” and “Steel Magnolias.”

Canada retaliates on tariffs

In response to tariffs imposed on Canadian goods by President Donald Trump, the Canadian government responded Tuesday with its own set of levies on American products.

Starting on Sept. 8, America’s northern neighbor will begin collecting tariffs ranging from 15 to 50 percent on products ranging from metals such as steel and aluminum and also clothing, forestry and electronics, according to The New York Times.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said that Canadian tariffs would match those from America “dollar by dollar” while conceding that they will “raise costs and reduce choices for Canadians.”

The exchange of tariffs came after the collapse of trade negotiations between the two nations, especially over tariffs on automobiles and appliances.

Almost 25 percent of NFL players died of brain trauma

A study released on Tuesday claims that almost one in four former NFL players who died between 2021 and 2026 had chronic traumatic encephalopathy, a condition associated with concussions.

United Press International’s report indicated that the study by several New England hospitals and medical schools “is a sobering reminder that football carries real risk, and those risks can have lasting consequences for players and their families,” the NFL Players Association said in a statement.

Concern over brain damage from violent tackles and blocks is believed to have reduced the number of young people competing in tackle football in high school and helped spur the popularity of flag football, which bans tackling and most forms of blocking.
