Movies: “Mother!” and “Assassins” in action

Films opening this weekend in local cinemas:

• “Mother!” is a horror story starring Jennifer Lawrence, Javier Bardem, Ed Harris and Michelle Pfeiffer. Rated R.
• “American Assassin” tells the tale of a man seeking revenge who is turned into a top-notch anti-terrorist operative. Starring Michael Keaton and Dylan O’Brien. Rated R.

On Stage: “Sweeny Todd” opens in Westminster

• “Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Wall Street” opens Friday at the Rose Center Theater in Westminster in the Civic Center. Performances Friday and Saturday at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m.
• “Pirates of Penzance” closes this weekend at the Festival Amphitheater on Main Street in Garden Grove, produced by Shakespeare Orange County. Shows Friday and Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
• “Love From A Stranger” is on stage at the Westminster Community Playhouse, 7272 Maple St., with performances on Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m.
