The ninth annual Blessing of the Waves, a spiritual event focusing on the importance of water and the environment, will be held on Sunday, Sept., 18 at 8:30 a.m. a.m. at Pier Plaza in Huntington Beach, just LogoforNewsBriefsnorth of the city pier. Appearing will be:

  • Shirley Babashoff, an eight-time Olympic medalist, who will receive the Lifetime Achievement Award
  • The Huntington Beach High School surf team, which won the National Surf Championship last summer, the team’s 18th such title.
  • Rev. Anthony Bogar of Surf City United Methodist Church, who will be the keynote speaker. Clergy from a variety of faiths will also be on hand.

Also appearing will be Dean Torrance of the rock group Jan and Dean, who musically christened Huntington Beach as “Surf City” with their hit song in the Sixties, and Father Chrisian Mondor, 91, known as the “Surfing Priest.”


GGUSDlogoThe Spanish Dual Language Immersions Academy, the first of its kind for the Garden Grove Unified School District, will have a “launch party” on Monday, Sept. 19 at 9 a.m. at Monroe Elementary School in Fountain Valley.

Students will start learning 90 percent in Spanish and 10 percent in English for kindergarten and first grade, then decreasing the ratio to 50 percent for each in both languages by sixth grade.


A “Fall into Fall” KidX event will be held on Saturday, Sept. 17 at Westminster Mall. Programming will starts at 1 p.m. in the Macy’s court in the mall’s lower level. Participating children will be involved in fall-themed crafts and view interactive puppet shows at 1:15 and 2:15 p.m. Registration is free.

The Huntington Beach Police Department will host an open house on Saturday, Sept. 17 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The event will include tours of the police station (2000 Main St., at Yorktown Avenue), an historic display and appearances by the HBPD K-9 unit, SWAT, mounted unit and helicopter. A barbecue lunch will be available to benefit the department’s running team.
