Is La Quinta for real? The Aztec football team recorded its fifth with in six games with a 42-21 win over Santiago in the Garden Grove League opener for both teams Friday night. In another crucial, Westminster – tapped by many as the favorite to win the Golden West League title – lost 28-22 to Segerstrom.

Here are Friday’s results for teams in the Garden Grove-Huntington Beach-Westminster area.

Empire League

Valencia 28, Pacifica 14: The Mariners lost their league opener to the Tigers at Garden Grove High. Ben Jefferson threw for 228 yards for the Mariners (3-3) but was intercepted three times. Syrus Collins added 103 yards rushing.

Garden Grove League

La Quinta 42, Santiago 21: The blue-and-gold had a 28-7 lead at halftime and went on to the GGL victory over Santiago at Bolsa Grande High. Brandon Le ran for 68 yards, Michael Nadeau for 64 and Dylan Do for 56. For the Cavaliers, Dylan Ourng ran for 116 yards. La Quinta is now 5-1, and has won more games than it did all season last year when the team was 4-6. Santiago falls to (1-5).

Golden West League

Segerstrom 28, Westminster 22: The Jaguars, ranked number one in the CIF-SS Division 12, had all they could handle with the Lions. It took a touchdown with 45 seconds to play to defeat the Lions (2-4). Josh Avila was the WHS standout, rushing for 159 yards and one touchdown.

Sunset League

Huntington Beach 23, Fountain Valley 6: After a scoreless first quarter, the Oilers (3-3) got some traction and went on to defeat the Barons (1-5). Nick Welch threw for 171 yards for HBHS; Garrett Horn passed for 226 yards for FVHS.

Los Alamitos 47, Marina 0: The Vikings (3-3) got a solid thumping from the Griffins, falling behind 40-0 at the half in this game at Westminster High. Ian Green passed for 101 yards for Marina.
