In what could be described either as “fake news” or the ultimate Hollywood ending, “Moonlight” was awarded the Oscar on Sunday night for Best Picture, but only after “La La Land” was erroneously declared the winner.
The 89th awards ceremony of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences ended in near-chaos as presenter Faye Dunaway – apparently given the wrong card to read – anointed the musical.
But even as the speeches on behalf of “La La Land” were being given, confusion on stage was obvious, and the announcement was changed.
Other major awards were:
- Best Actor: Casey Affleck, “Manchester by the Sea.”
- Best Actress: Emma Stone, “La La Land.”
- Best Director: Damien Chazelle, “La La Land.”
- Best Supporting Actor: Mahershala Ali, “Moonlight.”
- Best Supporting Actress: Viola Davis, “Fences.”
