Orangewood advances and Oilers fall

ORANGEWOOD ACADEMY of Garden Grove advanced to the CIF SoCal regional semifinal with its win over Canyon.

One survivor remained among area schools in the CIF Southern California regional playoffs. Huntington Beach lost 65-46 to national powerhouse Mater Dei, but Orangewood Academy of Garden Grove advanced with a 53-47 win over Canyon High (Canyon Country) in Division II action on Saturday.

The Oilers played the Monarchs tough and only trailed by four points at the half. But a 26-11 edge for Mater Dei in the third quarter proved decisive. Frankie Wade-Sanchez led HB with 31 points as the orange-and-black finished the season 24-10.

Orangewood (21-9) advanced to the regional semifinals with its win. Estefania Giner led the Spartans with 19 points, followed by Gabriela Rosas with 14. Next up will be a game in their home gym against Independence High (30-3) of Bakersfield on Tuesday.

The Spartans are seeded first in the field, and the Falcons fifth.
