Four players scored in double figures as Orangewood Academy of Garden Grove defeated Independence High of Bakersfield 56-63 in a CIF SoCal regional Division II girls’ basketball semifinal game on Tuesday.
The Spartans (22-9) were led by Carolina Montes with 16 points. Itzel Rubio scored 11 for the home team, and Wendy Duran and Estefania Giner each had 10. Orangewood now advances to the regional finals on Saturday against national powerhouse Mater Dei (23-8) of Santa Ana, which defeated Valencia High of Valencia 53-45.
CIF POLLS FOR SPRING SPORTS
This week’s CIF-SS polls for spring sports honors several teams in the Garden Grove-Huntington Beach-Westminster area.
Baseball: Huntington Beach is ranked first in Division 1.
Softball: Pacifica is ninth in Division 1. Santiago and Rancho Alamitos are first and second in Division 6.
Boys’ volleyball: Edison is ninth in Division 1, while Huntington Beach is tied for 10th with Palos Verdes. Fountain Valley is 10th in Division 2. Garden Grove and Bolsa Grande are fourth in sixth in Division 4. Unranked but receiving votes in Division 3 is Westminster.
