Oilers and Argonauts setting the pace

HUNTINGTON BEACH defeated Los Alamitos 10-3 in a big Sunset League showdown.

Huntington Beach climbed back into first place in the Sunset League and Garden Grove kept its top spot in the Garden Grove League with baseball wins on Friday afternoon.

The Oilers, 13-3 overall, defeated Los Alamitos 10-3 to improve to 5-1 in league play, tied with Marina (5-1, 10-6). The orange and black got a big day from Hagen Danner, who pitched five innings of scoreless ball and homered in the game at the HBHS diamond.

The Argonauts scored five runs in the bottom of the second en route to an 8-1 win over Los Amigos. Grove (6-1 in league and 9-4 overall) was led by Cesar Valencia, who improved his record to 6-0, striking out 13 batters and yielding just four hits and one run. Cesar Carranza drove in four runs for Grove.

Santiago High, meanwhile took the lead in the battle for second place in the GGL with its 3-0 defeat of La Quinta. The Cavs outhit the Lobos 11-6 and broke a scoreless tie with solo runs in the seventh, sixth and fifth innings.
