A fire at a single-family home in Garden Grove just before noon on Sunday did an estimated $550,000 damage and sent one firefighter to the hospital. According to Capt. Thanh Nguyen of the Garden Grove Fire Department, the blaze was in the 11100 block of Rainier Court, in the area of Katella Avenue and Brookhurst Street.
Arriving firefighters found problems such as downed power line, “excessive storage” in the home and “backdraft” – a dangerous condition that occurs when oxygen is re-introduced to a fire, such as in the breaking of a window. The elderly resident of the home was not at home and three pets were rescued.
The injured firefighter was treated for smoke inhalation and was taken to a local hospital in stable condition. The blaze took one hour and 20 minutes to be brought under control by the Garden Grove Fire Department, with help from Anaheim Fire & Rescue, Orange (City) Fire Department and the Orange County Fire Authority.
The home was totally destroyed. The value of the damage was put at $500,000 to property and $50,000 to contents. The cause of the fire is under investigation by the GGPD.
