Angels edge Athletics 2-1 in marathon

Marathons aren’t just for runners. The Los Angeles Angels and the Oakland A’s were locked up in a 1-1 game in the 11th inning at Anaheim before pushing across the winning run in the bottom of the frame.
The game was scoreless through nine, but each team finally got on the board with a home run in the 10th

Josh Phegley homered to right center to give Oakland a 1-0 lead in the top of the inning, but Mike Trout countered with his own four-bagger to right to tie it up. J.C. Ramirez pitched well for the Angels, allowing just two hits and no runs through seven innings.

The Angels finally won it in the bottom of the 11th when Kole Calhoun singled home Danny Espinosa with two out for the final 2-1 result. The win improved the Halo’s record to 10-12, good for third place in the AL West. It was their third win in four games.

VOLLEYBALL IS BIG WITH LOCALS

The Garden Grove-Huntington Beach area may have two national high school sports powerhouses in Huntington Beach High’s baseball team and Pacifica’s softball team, but it’s the boys’ volleyball teams that are the most honored in this week’s CIF-SS rankings.

Seven local teams were recognized in that sport. In Division 1, Edison is seventh and HBHS is eighth. Fountain Valley is ninth in Division 2. In D-4, Bolsa Grande is fifth, La Quinta 8th and Garden Grove, while unranked, did receive some votes. Orange High is fifth in Division 5.
