Holy strawberries, Batman! The celebrity grand marshal for the 2017 Strawberry Festival in Garden Grove will be Burt Ward, who portrayed Robin in the campy Sixties TV series “Batman.”

The theme for the festival this year will be “Honoring Our Community Superhero Volunteers.” Ward will be joined in the parade by theme grand marshal Randy Barth, founder and CEO of THINK Together, a non-profit organization working to improve education and student achievement.

The parade will be held on the streets of the Big Strawberry on Saturday, May 27. The festival, which celebrates Garden Grove’s agricultural roots, will be at the Village Green Park (Main and Euclid streets) in the downtown area of the city from Friday, May 26 through Monday May 29 over the Memorial Day weekend.

Ward, 71, is internationally-known as the actor who brought to life the comic book sidekick of the superhero Batman on the ABC program which lasted three seasons and introduced the Boy Wonder’s exclamations into household words.

After his career as Robin, Ward – born Bert John Gervais, Jr. – had roles in made-for-TV movies and several reunions with Adam West, who played Batman in the series. Currently, he and his wife Tracy Posner Ward are involved with Gentle Giants Rescue and Adoptions non-profit which helps place big dog breeds such as Great Danes in homes.
