11 locals in baseball, softball playoffs

ELEVEN local baseball and softball teams will be in the CIF-SS playoffs this week.

Huntington Beach High’s baseball team – already in possession of an unofficial state title – will begin its quest for a CIF-SS Division 1 crown on Thursday when it hosts Redondo Union High at the Oiler field at 3:15 p.m.

Pairings and brackets for baseball and softball were announced on Monday, and 11 local squads will be involved in the playoffs

The Oilers (25-4) are ranked first in California and third in the nation by the Maxpreps.com website. They will take on the Seahawks (17-11) in the first round of the D-1 tournament; if they win they will face the winner of Cypress-Servite game on Tuesday (May 23).

In other baseball matchups, Edison will visit Wilson of Long Beach Thursday in Division 1 play, while in D-4, Rancho Alamitos will visit Capistrano Valley Christian. In D-5 action, Garden Grove will visit Hillcrest of Riverside and La Quinta will host North High of Torrance.

On the softball front, Pacifica will host Saugus and Sunny Hills will be at Huntington Beach in Division 1 action. The Division 2 bracket has Marina visiting Villa Park and Edison traveling to play Camarillo.

D-4 action has Valencia of Pacifica at Garden Grove, while La Quinta play at Alverno Heights Academy of Sierra Madre in Division 5 action. Santiago will host Northview of Covina.

All the baseball and softball first round games are set for Thursday, unless changed by agreement between both teams.
