UPDATE: A paddleboarder who fell into the water in a channel in Huntington Harbour has died. According to the Orange County Coroner’s office, Jose Mendoza, 36, of Lakewood was pronounced dead at 5:04 p.m. Tuesday at Hoag Memorial Hospital in Newport Beach.

A man is in critical condition after a near-drowning incident Tuesday afternoon in Huntington Harbour. According to Huntington Beach Fire Department Fire Captain Steven Teasdale, the incident took place around 3:30 p.m. near 16561 Channel Lane.

The man was operating a standup paddleboard when he fell into the water and didn’t surface. Fire department and lifeguard units responded and searched for the victim in the water.

Murky water conditions, a muddy ocean bottom and zero visibility under the surface complicated the search, but after 25 minutes the victim was found and pulled from the water.

He was treated by paramedics and taken to a local hospital. Four HBFD units, and the Huntington Beach police helicopter – along with lifeguards – assisted in the search and rescue operation.
