A BAN on the sale of non-medical marijuana will be considered by the Huntington Beach Planning Commission on Tuesday, July 25.

Should non-medicinal marijuana be sold in Huntington Beach? The city planning commission will take up that issue when it meets on Tuesday evening.

Planners will consider a proposed zoning text amendment and draft ordinance which would ban commercial or recreational use of cannabis in the city, as well as prohibit the delivery of such in city limits. The proposals also create regulations for the cultivation of non-medical marijuana.

California voters in 2016 approved Proposition 64, which legalized the use and sale of marijuana, but allowed cities to choose whether or not to permit the sales within their limits.

Such a ban is supported by the police department, which expressed concern over existing medical marijuana sales. “Locally, Huntington Beach has experienced problems with medical marijuana locations even though they are prohibited businesses by ordinance. There have been reports of robberies, thefts and attempted burglaries. It is reasonable to assume that commercial non-medical marijuana businesses and non-medical marijuana deliveries will have similar impacts,” according to the HBPD.

Garden Grove and Westminster have already enacted ordinances that prohibit the sales and delivery of non-medicinal marijuana.

The planners meet in the council chambers at 7 p.m. in the civic center at 2000 Main St. (at Yorktown Avenue).
