Rustlers win, lose QB’s; Mariners roll

Golden West College’s football team won its first-ever home opener Saturday night, defeating Glendale 17-10, but lost two of its quarterbacks.

The Rustlers, who now have an on-campus facility, suffered injuries to starting QB Beau Kalbacher and backup Josh Buksa. Third-string QB Joe Pyle came in and passed for 51 yards and a TD in a defensive-dominated game.

GWC will be on action next Saturday, visiting Riverside City College

Jefferson leads Mariners to 33-7 win

In a battle of two seagoing-themed high school football teams, the Pacifica Mariners (2-0) cruised away with a 33-7 win over the Newport Harbor Sailors Saturday night at Bolsa Grande Stadium.

Quarterback Ben Jefferson passed for 270 yards and two touchdowns, and Rai Sagastume rushed for 101 yards. Matt Moslenko caught four passes for two scores and 122 yards in the win.

Pacifica will host Dana Hills (0-2) next Saturday at Bolsa.

Trojans hold off feisty Western Michigan team

It look a fourth-quarter rally for the USC Trojans to put away Western Michigan 49-31 in the season opener Saturday at the Coliseum.

Sam Darnold passed for 289 yards and two scores in the win. Ronald Jones rushed for 159 yards and three touchdowns.

The Broncos scored first and matched the Trojans score for score until the final quarter. USC is next in action next Saturday hosting Stanford in Los Angeles.
