UPDATE: The motorist killed in Saturday’s accident has been identified as Jose Fernandez, 19, of Garden Grove by the Orange County Coroner’s office.

One person is dead and another hospitalized after their sports utility vehicle crashed into a utility pole early Saturday morning in Garden Grove.

According to police, the incident occurred around 3:17 a.m. near West Street and Chapman Avenue. Arriving officers found a silver Toyota IM rolled onto its roof. It’s believed that the vehicle was traveling in the right lane of northbound West Street when it struck an Edison light pole just south of Chapman.

The pole was sheared off and the SUV flipped and came to rest in that lane.

The driver of the vehicle – identified only as a male – was trapped in the auto and the passenger, also a male, had been partially ejected from the SUV. He was extricated by firefighters and both were treated at the scene and taken to UCI Medical Center in Orange for treatment.

Shortly after arrival at UCIMC, the driver was pronounced dead. The passenger is listed in stable condition and is expected to survive. The investigation is continuing and witnesses to the crash are asked to call GGPD Traffic Investigator Royce Wimmer at (714) 741-5230.
