Griffs, Vaqueros get key gridiron wins

 

LOS ALAMITOS is the outright Sunset League football champ and Rancho Alamitos locked up third place in the Garden Grove League after victories on Thursday night.

Los Alamitos tied up complete possession of the Sunset League title with a win Thursday night, and Rancho Alamitos locked up third place in the Garden Grove League and a playoff spot with a victory as well.

The Griffins (7-3 overall and 5-0 in league play) defeated Fountain Valley (6-4, 2-3) 41-6. The Barons stayed close early, trailing only by 14-0 at the half. FV will finish fourth in the league but may still win a CIF-SS postseason bid.

Rancho Alamitos outlasted a game Santiago team 28-21 to sew up its own playoff berth. The Vaqs are 6-4 overall and 3-2 in league. Santiago fell to 5-5 and 2-3.

In boys’ water polo CIF second round action on Thursday, Pacifica bested La Sierra 13-1 in Division 6 play. In Division 5, Ocean View lost 20-11 to Temescal Canyon.

In girls’ volleyball CIF action, Orangewood lost 3-0 to Sacred Heart of Jesus in the Division 9 opener.
