One high school football team from Westminster on Thursday advanced to the CIF-SS semi-final round, and one did not.
La Quinta (11-1) defeated The Webb Schools 56-28 to move into the Division 13 round of four. The Aztecs will face the winner of Friday’s match between Silver Valley and Nogales next week. The blue-and-gold could be in for an historic season they defeat their semifinal foe. The Aztecs, who finished second in the Garden Grove League, haven’t been in a CIF-SS football final since 1989, and have never won a section gridiron title.
In Thursday’s win, quarterback Michael Nadeau passed for three touchdowns and ran for two more.
In Division 11 action, the Westminster Lions fell 42-28 to Covina to finish the season at 8-4. WHS fell behind 28-0 but rallied to make a game of it. Noah Melbon passed for 217 yards and two scores for the Lions, and Christian Jaime ran for 96 yards and two touchdowns in a valiant but losing effort.
