Panthers and Ducks both fall short

ORANGE HIGH lost the state football title game and the Anaheim Ducks fell in overtime.

Orange High’s quest for a first-ever state football championship fell just short when the Panthers lost 31-29 to Strathmore Saturday night at Fred Kelly Stadium on the El Modena High campus.

The Panthers and Spartans were close all night in the Division 6-AA title game. OHS led 16-15 at the half and the schools traded touchdowns after intermission, with the difference being two-point conversions by the visitors.

Orange finishes an historic year with a 13-3 record, while Strathmore has a 16-0 record.

Ducks can’t hang on, lose to Caps

A 2-0 lead wasn’t quite enough for the Anaheim Ducks as they lost 3-2 to the Washington Capitals on the road Saturday night. The loss puts the Ducks at 14-11-8, worth fourth place in the NHL Pacific Division.

Anaheim got goals from Jakob Silfverberg and Derek Grant to build that edge after two periods, but the Caps countered with third period tallies to knot it up and send the game into overtime. Alex Ovechkin scored the winner at 1:58 of sudden death to end the contest.

The Ducks are next in action on Monday when they face the Devils (18-9-5) in New Jersey.
