Oilers surge into 1st-place tie with LA

SIX of nine local prep basketball teams won Tuesday night, including two of four girls teams.

HUNTINGTON BEACH HIGH’S girls’ basketball team is tied for first in the Sunset League.

Marisa Tanga and Bella Serrano each scored 14 points to lead Huntington Beach High to a 40-28 win over Fountain Valley Thursday night in a Sunset League girls’ basketball game at the Oiler gym.

The victory put HBHS into a tie for first place in the Sunset with Los Alamitos (both 3-0). The Oilers will face the Griffins on Tuesday night it a battle for first at the LAHS gymnasium.

In other Sunset girls’ basketball action on Thursday, Marina (0-3 in league) lost 74-29 to Los Al despite a 22-point effort by Katie Nguyen. Also, Edison (2-1) rolled past Newport Harbor (1-2) by the score of 60-29. Ashley Niemand had 18 points for the Chargers.

In San Joaquin League play, Orangewood Academy bested Avalon 57-37. The Spartans got balanced scoring as no player hit double figures, but four had eight or more points. It was the SJL opener for both teams.

On the boys’ side, Orangewood lost 59-52 to Capistrano Valley Christian in the male SJL first game.
