Edison, Garden Grove and Ocean View high school boys’ basketball teams took over first place in their leagues with victories on Friday night.
The Chargers defeated Newport Harbor 59-48 in the EHS gym, led by David Atencio’s 20 points. Edison is now 3-0 in the Sunset League, while Newport drops to 2-1 and into a second place tie with Los Alamitos, which defeated Marina 68-60.
Edison (now 13-5 overall) led by as many as 16 going into the fourth quarter and survived a late surge by the Sailors (14-5) to post the win. The two teams will meet again on Monday, Jan. 29 in the Sailor gym.
Garden Grove (18-1 overall) cruised to an 87-40 win over Los Amigos (9-9) to take sole possession of first place in the Garden Grove League with a 2-0 mark.
The Argonauts raced out to a 30-4 first quarter lead and went on to the win. They were led by Alexis Ortega with 20 points, along with Brandon Coleman and Sebastian Castro, each with 17.
Pacifica moved into a tie for first in the Empire League with a 66-46 win over Western. The Mariners (12-6 overall, 2-0 in league) are tied with Cypress (14-4, 2-0). The two will meet on Jan. 23 in the Centurion gym.
Tyler Fabisiak led the M’s with 20 points, followed by 18 from Andrew Brown.
Also on Friday, Ocean View (14-4) is setting the pace in the Golden West League at 2-0 after a 106-62 win over Loara. Mekhel Harvey scored 32 for the Seahawks and Seth Mishler added 25 points.
