Election sequence change OKd for WSD

WESTMINSTER SCHOOL DISTRICT will go to a by-district election plan in 2018 and 2020.

A change in the sequence of elections for members of the Westminster School District Board of Trustees was approved by the board on Thursday night.

The WSD is moving from at-large voting for its governing board to electing trustees by districts. In November 2017 the board selected a map and borders for its five districts, with elections scheduled for Areas 1, 3 and 5 in 2018 and in 2020 for Areas 2 and 4.

However, some community members raised objections, saying that the decision favored one incumbent trustee. At Thursday’s public hearing on the matter, nine speakers supported the revision that was approved by the board.

The map will remain the same, but in 2018 it will be elections in Areas 2, 3 and 5 and in 2020 in Areas 1 and 4.

Additionally, the board approved a resolution requesting a waiver from the State Board of Education of requirements that would require an election on the “change in election methodology.”
