A Garden Grove man was sentenced to nine years in prison Friday for attacking and wounding his wife with a meat cleaver.
According to the Orange County District Attorney’s office, Thang Van Nguyen, 48, received his sentence in Central Justice Center in Santa Ana.
He was found guilty on Thursday of attempted voluntary manslaughter, mayhem, and inflicting physical injury on his spouse. Sentencing enhancements included domestic violence causing great bodily injury and personal use of a deadly weapon.
The incident occurred in the morning of Jan. 19, 2016 at the family’s apartment in Garden Grove. During an argument between Nguyen and his wife, he grabbed a meat cleaver from the kitchen and struck her in the head, leaving deep cuts.
She called for help, and Garden Grove Fire Department paramedics treated her. She was taken to UCI Medical Center in Orange where she was put into a medically-induced coma and treated for a brain injury. Garden Grove police investigated the case and arrested Nguyen.
