The City of Garden Grove’s Community Services Department was recently recognized with two Award of Excellence distinctions in Economic Vitality and Marketing and Communications for efforts made towards Re:Imagine Garden Grove-Open Streets. The awards were presented by the California Park and Recreation Society (CPRS) during the 70th annual CPRS Conference and Expo in Long Beach. Garden Grove Mayor Steve Jones, City Manager Scott Stiles, and Community Services Director John Montanchez accepted the awards on behalf of the City.
Inaugurated in 2014, Re:Imagine Garden Grove-Open Streets is a City-wide initiative aimed at creating unique public spaces through innovative and fun experiences, while promoting a bike-friendly and pedestrian-friendly city.
“This is an exciting accomplishment for the City,” said Mayor Jones. “These awards are testaments to the quality of work from staff and the certainty that the Re:Imagine Garden Grove-Open Streets events help further our position in Orange County as a progressive city, ready to re-imagine its future.”
The selection process for the Economic Vitality Award of Excellence evaluated the positive impact and enhanced economic position Re:Imagine Garden Grove-Open Streets has on the community.
“Re:Imagine has brought the vision of Garden Grove’s future to the present,” said Montanchez. “The past three Open Streets events have allowed tens of thousands of visitors to experience our downtown area and its unique collection of restaurants, retail, and open spaces.”
Recognizing the efforts made towards marketing the third Open Streets event held on April 1, 2017, the City received the Marketing and Communications Award of Excellence for its innovative and detailed promotional and publicity strategies that attracted upwards of 15,000 local and regional attendees to car-free Garden Grove streets.
