HUNTINGON BEACH and Pacifica won second round CIF-SS softball games on Tuesday.

Two local softball teams survived the second round of the CIF-SS playoffs on Tuesday, but two others, as well as two area baseball teams, did not.

In Division 1 softball, Huntington Beach (now 21-7) defeated Valencia High of Valencia 3-0. Grace Uribe pitched a three-hitter for the Oilers, and Katelyn Mangrello hit a two-run double in the win.

HBHS now advances to the quarterfinals on Thursday, where they will face the winner of the Norco-Santa Margarita game.

Pacifica High’s D-1 team upset Los Alamitos 4-2 in another second round game. The Mariners (21-10) outplayed the Griffins (24-3), who were ranked fourth in the state.

In the quarterfinals, the M’s will face Chino Hills, which defeated Murrieta Mesa 2-0.

The other two local teams suffered losses. In Division 2, Edison lost 2-1 to Aliso Niguel, and Westminster lost 2-1 to Marymount in D-7 action.

In the baseball second round, Huntington Beach was upset by Dos Pueblos, losing 6-5 in Division 1. The Oilers (28-5) went into the game ranked fourth in the U.S and second in the state. The Chargers (25-3) are rated 36th in the state and 201st nationally.

Ocean View lost 10-6 to Redlands in Division 3.

Angels stumble early, lose 5-3

The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim suffered their eighth loss in 11 games on Tuesday, falling 5-3 to the Toronto Blue Jays on the road.

Garrett Richards (4-3) was tagged for the loss but only gave up one earned run, as the Halos yielded five runs in the first and couldn’t catch up.

An error by Angel outfielder Chris Young allowed two runs to score, and that was followed by a two-run home run by former Angel Kendrys Morales.

The Halos battled back with two runs in the fourth and one more in the eighth, but couldn’t close the gap. They are now 26-22 and in third place in the American League West, fourth games behind the first place Houston Astros.

After a 13-3 start, the Angels have gone 13-19. They will face the Blue Jays (23-25) again in Toronto with Tyler Skaggs (3-3) making the start for the Orange County team.
