HB, Westminster join in homeless help

HUNTINGTON Beach, Westminster and Midway City will be helping to provide housing for the homeless.

Huntington Beach will be one of the the north Orange County cities offering to provide additional shelter to the homeless, but the location won’t be in Surf City.

On Wednesday, Anaheim, Huntington Beach and Santa Ana committed to 700 new beds to house the unhoused. Santa Ana will be replacing the 400-bed courtyard shelter with a new 700-bed facility.

Anaheim with 200 beds presently, will add 325 more.

Huntington Beach will do its part by adding 75 beds in Midway City through a joint funding deal with Westminster and Midway City. There are currently 20 shelter beds in Midway City.

South county cities have made no commitments or offers to provide housing for the homeless, but mayors from that area have promised to meet soon on the issue.

Summer fun in Westminster starts soon

Westminster’s Community Services and Recreation Department will kick off its Summer Parks and Recreation Program on June 25. It will continue for eight weeks through Aug.17.

Bolsa Chica, Liberty, Park West and Sigler parks will be open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Bowling Green and Gillespie parks will be open from 12-4 p.m. There will be no programs on Wednesday, July 4 and Wednesday, July 18.

Free summer activities include arts and crafts, sports, educational enrichment and games. It’s a drop-in supervised program designed for elementary school-aged children. Kids under the age of 6 must be accompanied by a parent or adult.

Pre-registration is preferred, but not required. Registration forms can be filled out at the Community Services and Recreation Department and will also be available at the parks.

New leaders for 2018-19 in OVSD

Four educators have been approved for new posts in the Ocean View School District by the Board of Trustees.

Sara Schaible will become principal at Marine View Middle School, promoted from assistant principal.

Cindy Pedroso will become the new early education assistant principal. Jadyn Grunbaum will become the new assistant principal at Vista View Middle School. Isis Ortiz will become assistant principal at Mesa View Middle School.

  The OVSD serves northern California and and parts of Westminster and Midway City.
